Geochronology of metamorphic rocks from the Himalaya
Advisor: Dr. John Cottle-UCSB
The Himalayan mountains are among the most spectacular geologic features on Earth and preserve a vital record of collisional orogenesis. Study of the metamorphic rocks exposed within the Himalaya has given rise to many of the models used to explain the tectonic processes—low crustal flow, orogenic wedge development, formation of gneiss domes— considered fundamental to crustal deformation. Despite this, however, many aspects of the metamorphic history of this area remain unresolved. Continued investigation of several understudied areas within the Himalaya, such as the Kathmandu Klippe, may uncover important aspects of the petrologic evolution and early metamorphic history of the orogen.
